Angèle Mac-Auliffe (1877 - 1908) was the daughter of a doctor originally from Brittany who moved to Reunion Island where he was assigned to Cilaos Spa.
Angèle was self-taught with a passion for white embroidery.
Exploring different techniques, such as Ténériffe lace, she mixed and purified, inventing imaginary motifs and flowers: the days of Cilaos were born...
At the age of 23, she created an embroidery workshop and passed on her skills to some 20 girls.
After her untimely death, the workshop continued to grow thanks to the embroiderers she trained.
The sisters then structured the workshop by training and offering jobs to women who wanted them.
It is a wonderful story of the transmission of technique from mother to daughter.
The days of Cilaos are not set in stone; this is a living embroidery, constantly evolving to fit the imagination of the women of this isolated place.
This book embraces all the diversity and originality of the days of Cilaos.
You will discover a detailed history of this style of embroidery, with unpublished documents and photos of samples attributed to Angèle Mac-Auliffe.
A step-by-step technical booklet will give you all the basics you need to create the simplest and most complicated designs.
A series of original designs will show you that this embroidery is absolutely current and versatile. It can be used to repair a tear in a garment with originality and elegance. It can also be used to fill a frame or to make decorations on cardboard, lampshades, chair backs, etc.
