Kogin-zashi is a traditional art originating in Aomori Prefecture (Japan), currently known as a very easy and affordable sashiko (embroidery) craft. Kogin, (correct pronunciation Koghìn) is embroidery that is done by passing threads through fabric and creating geometric patterns and decorations with threads. According to literature its origin dates back before the year 1000 AD, but Sashiko-kogin originated in the Tohoku district in the Edo period (1603-1868). nitially, farmers in Kyoto, sewed used clothing that could not be marketed in Aomori with substandard material. The function was to strengthen fabrics and retard wear and tear. The embroideries, were developed along the shoulders and back of the kimonos with hemp that could easily be salvaged..
