There are two fabrics in the Hindelooper costume that really hit the eyes: the chintz, a cotton fabric with a painted flower motif, and the East Asian printed cotton fabric, with a woven chequered motif. During the 17th and 18th centuries these beautiful fabrics, just like coffee, were shipped from India to Amsterdam by VOC (The Dutch-East Asian trading company). Here the people from Hindeloopen (a small society from the province Friesland in the northern part of the Netherlands) bought a lot of these fabrics for the money they earned on their own profitable trade.
Each colour in the Hindeloopen fabrics tells its own story. The red chintz, on a white background, was used for the “bruidswentke” a bridal gown. The dark blue and light blue colours were used for sad events, while the multi-coloured fabrics were for general use. All these flowered fabrics are combined with chequered fabrics in the Hindelooper costume.
